Global climate change and geological time scales?

Temperatures have changed over time throughout the history of the earth. Of these long spanning fluctuating climactic periods, are we currenty living in a "cool period" or a "warm period," and over the last 300 years has the temperature been steadily "increasing" or "decreasing" or "remaining constant"? (I belive this question is refering to global climate changes over time irrespective of anthropomorphic influences e.g. the burning of fossil fuels, etc, but I'm not so sure).
