When fossil fuels are extracted from beneath the Earth's surface, what becomes of the void left behind.?

Drilling for and removing oil must leave a huge empty space beneath the Earth's surface. What is done, if anything, to fill the space? Is it necessary? Do these areas have an effect on other geological materials? Can these voids exacerbate existing fault lines, create new ones or be a contributing factor in the frequency and severity of earthquakes?
