Why do fear mongering Christians believe that natural disasters are a new thing and that they are increasing?

Natural disasters have always been happening since the very beginning of earth. They have happened at various rates throughout history, but there is no sign that they are increasing now. Actually, there were much, MUCH worse natural disasters in the past that would wipe out almost all of the life on earth. When you look at the big picture, we are really in a time of geological peace. The natural disasters aren't increasing or going out of control, but the news coverage is.
