Is it possible to get an emo haircut without straightening it?

ok. so i have some extremely poofy hair, cause i'm african american. I just love looking at all of those really crazy emo hairstyles and i said to myself ; i'm tired of this stupid poofy hair! amd also my parents said they were gonna cut it to boy size :( so i need to show them that i can take care of my hair and look good at the same time, but they're techno dinos. u know how everyone likes to listen to pop stuff except for me (not a huge pop fan)? my dad always flips the station when the radio plays black & yellow er something. ok, back on topic! i want you people to answer my question, and also send me a picture of a cool emo hairstyle you think would be easy to fix. and i also want you to tell me how i can straighten my hair without using a flat iron, cause my stupid hair is all poof and stuff :(
