How do I save my files?

I have bought this new HP pavilion laptop with windows 7. The problem is that the recovery media that hp has sent with it only restores the computer to its original factory settings meaning it erases all the partition that I have created and erasing all my saved files. How do I reinstall windows 7 on my laptop without loosing all my data. If my computer were to crash or get virus could i restore the computer with the system image or repair disc that windows 7 can create?
